What the YouTube Video Statistics tool does

Paste the link of a public YouTube video, click Statistic, and the tool shows the public numbers for that video, such as views, likes and comments. It is handy when you want a quick look at how a video is doing, or when you want to compare a few videos on the same topic.

How to use it

1. Open the video on YouTube and copy its link from the address bar, or click Share and then Copy.
2. Paste the link into the box above.
3. Click Statistic. Sample loads an example so you can see how the tool works, and Reset clears the box.
4. Note the numbers, then repeat with other videos if you want to compare them.

What the numbers tell you, and what they don't

• Views show how many times people watched the video. They don't show how long anyone stayed, so a video can have many views and still lose most viewers in the first minute.
• Likes are a rough sign that viewers enjoyed it. They mean more when you compare them with views.
• Comments show how many people cared enough to reply. Read a few. They often tell you what viewers want next.
• Upload date matters as much as any number. 10,000 views in a week and 10,000 views in two years are very different results.

How to compare YouTube videos fairly

1. Pick three to five videos on the same topic that were uploaded around the same time.
2. Write down the views, likes and comments for each one.
3. Divide the likes by the views and multiply by 100 to get likes per 100 views. Divide the views by the days since upload to get views per day.
4. Look for the video that gets more likes or more views per day than the others, and study its title, thumbnail and description to see why.

Public numbers vs YouTube Studio analytics

A tool like this can only show what any visitor can see on the video page. The detailed reports, such as watch time, average view duration, impressions, click-through rate and audience retention, live in YouTube Studio, and only the owner of the channel can open them.
